Tucked in or left out: how to decide what works with your outfit
You've picked the shirt and the trousers, but one detail still changes the whole result: do you tuck the top in or leave it out? There's no single answer that works for every cut. The right call comes down to the shirt's length, how much room it gives you and what happens when you move.
Start with the length
Stand in front of the mirror and let the shirt fall without pulling it down. See where the hem lands in relation to your pockets and the crotch of your trousers. If it covers almost the entire top of your trousers and feels too long, try tucking it in. If it stops at a point you find balanced, leaving it out is worth a try too.
Check the back and sides as well. A result you like from the front may not work as well in profile, especially when the front and back aren't the same length. The model shots on the product page are useful for spotting these differences before you buy.
Tucked in: check the room at the waist
Tuck the shirt in, fasten your trousers, then slowly raise your arms. Leave a little room above the waistband rather than pulling the fabric taut. Sit down: the fastening should stay comfortable and the button placket shouldn't feel strained.
If too much fabric bunches at the waist, a different combination of cuts may feel better. There's no point tightening your belt further to fix a shirt that's too bulky. Try a pair of trousers that gives you more room first, or wear the top out if the length works for you.
Left out: look at the line with your trousers
An untucked shirt can work for a casual outfit, but the effect depends on the whole look. With loose-fitting trousers, see whether you like the two volumes together. With trousers that sit closer to the body, check that the gap between top and bottom gives you the result you're after. This is a question of silhouette preference, not a rule tied to body shape.
What about a half-tuck?
Gently tucking just the front into your trousers shows the waistline while leaving the sides loose. Try it without forcing the fabric. If creases gather around the buttons or you have to rearrange everything every time you move, a full tuck or leaving it fully out may be simpler day to day.
A shirt from the collection to try it with
The blue Calvin Klein Jeans shirt for women is one to look at at Maison Mercier. Compare its photos and size guidance with a shirt you already wear. The brand name alone won't tell you whether the length or the room through the body will suit you.
Before you head out, do the full test with your jacket and shoes on. Walk, sit down and check the back: an outfit that stays put is often the one you reach for most.
