Crew neck or V-neck: which jumper should you choose?
Two jumpers in the same colour can create very different outfits simply because of their necklines. Rather than looking for a neckline said to suit a particular body shape, start with a practical question: what do you want to wear your jumper with? Crew necks and V-necks reveal different parts of the layer underneath.
Choosing a crew neck: check how high it sits
A crew neck can sit close to the neck or have a more open neckline. Look at the photos of the jumper on the model to see exactly where the edge sits. If you plan to wear it on its own, consider whether the opening feels right for how you usually dress. If you will be wearing a T-shirt underneath, decide whether you want its neckline to show or stay hidden.
The men’s black Calvin Klein Jeans jumper, reference LV04RD313G, is listed as a crew neck in 100% cotton on its product page. The women’s beige Vero Moda jumper, reference 10351142, is also described as a crew neck, with a composition of 98% polyester and 2% elastane. The same neckline does not necessarily mean the same fabric or overall look.
Choosing a V-neck: decide how much to show
A V-neck reveals more of the top underneath, depending on how deep it is. With a shirt, look at how the collar and button placket sit within the opening. With a T-shirt, check the shape the two necklines create together: a visible edge can work as a styling choice, but it is worth deciding on that look before you get dressed.
The women’s white Guess jumper, reference W2YR31Z2V62, has a V-neck and is made from 100% cotton, according to its product page. The photos let you examine the opening; the description ‘V-neck’ alone does not tell you its exact depth.
Wearing a shirt underneath? Try moving around
Put on the shirt you would normally wear before trying on the jumper. Adjust the collar, then raise your arms and sit down. Check whether the collar points stay where you want them and whether the fabric bunches at the shoulders. Comfort depends on how the two garments work together, rather than the name of the neckline.
If you are also deciding how to wear your shirt at the waist, read our guide to wearing a shirt tucked in or untucked. It will help you assess the whole outfit, from collar to waistband.
Choose a jumper that works with your wardrobe
Before ordering, pick two outfits you already own that the new jumper could work with. For each one, note what you would wear underneath and how much of that layer you want to show. This gives you a clear basis for comparison, without having to buy an extra shirt or T-shirt to go with your choice.
Finally, check the size and care information for each individual style. A crew neck or V-neck alone cannot tell you how warm or sheer a jumper will be, or how it will fit.
